Grandparents on Spring break

One nice thing about my parents working for a school district is that they get spring break.  This year they decided to venture out to the farm for an overnight trip.  A special treat at the Wright house.

To start things off, Homemade Chimichangas.   Make ahead Mexican meat, recipe is from a great old cook book make-a-mix cookery. This is a fabulous book of great ways to save time in the kitchen, and it is all yummy!  Then onto homemade no-fry refried beans, this is one of my favorites, and so so so easy.  Also, homemade tortillas, using up the last of my bear lard (Marcy, we LOVED it!)  I use Pioneer Woman's recipe and directions except I like milk in the tortillas better than water, they seem to turn out softer.  I also made mexican rice with a recipe from a friend, (there's bacon in it, so....of COURSE that is yummy).

Fill em, Roll em, Fry em! Smother in guacamole, sourcream, and enchilada sauce, oh my!

Next up, an afternoon of game play.  Jenga, Pick up Sticks, Uno.  An afternoon of games reminded me of family vacations we used to take.  We'd go to a cabin and have lots of quiet family time.

We've never played pick up sticks at our house, and do not own an "official" set of them. So, I gathered up chopsticks and bamboo skewers...Seemed to work just fine!

Turns out, Grandma is the best at this game.  She skunked us all!

Later in the evening, the kids curled up and watched a movie while Gene and Alice came over and joined in the game fun. We had a full round of Chicken Foot. We thought Gene would win since he agreed to keep score, but that theory proved to be wrong, as each of us sailed by Kevin and he remained the winner.  He usually keeps score, which is why I thought we'd see him "go down", not so.

This morning we had a family favorite for breakfast, creamed egg on toast, more game playing, a lunch of Costco Ravioli, with choice of sauce, and asparagus.
Overall, a lovely visit with family and a nice break in the week.
Thanks for coming over to play Tomama and Topapa!
