We went hiking today with friends. We headed Northeast to areas I have not been in before. Our first stop was at the
Mitchell Monument. The only place on the contintental U.S. to sustain casualties in WWII. A bomb that had come over on a balloon from Japan and landed in the area near where a Sunday School group was picnicking. A curious child went to show off his find, and tragedy followed.
Gearhart Mountain
is a very cool shield volcano wilderness area. There is this great area on the trail called the Palisades. This area has huge rock formations to climb and enjoy looking at. All four
kids enjoyed themselves as did the three grown up women that took them.
We enjoyed a picnic lunch in the midst of the palisades. (a palisades
refers to a fence or wall, these huge formations definitely resemble
walls.)
I enjoyed our day and would love to go again and hike around more! Well worth the travel and time.
