butterfly release

Yesterday was Caiden's last day of school.

It was also his last day to share at school. Sharing has been his very favorite activity all year. Each week we discuss how many sleeps until Friday and what he is going to share.

For his last share we took two things. He took his stick horse. We also took our Five butterflies to show and release. Inside the classroom Caiden explained the lifecycle of the butterfly. (He had taken the caterpillars for share a couple of weeks ago, so they were familar with that step) He had it all in order and even knew the time frames and used the right science words...I am very proud of him.

When each got in the air they all waved and called, "bye, bye" very darling...18 preschoolers saying farewell. We did bring one back home, because it just didn't seem strong enough to fly. It was the last to emerge and the wings don't look quite right. We are giving it one more day to get stronger and will try to release it today. I would have been willing to leave it yesterday to fend for itself, but not with 18 little ones ready to "help".

How did we get them out of the habitat? I used craft sticks with sugar water for the kids to entice the critters with. Then once they had a last drink they took off. Caiden figured out on his own that he could "throw" them and they would get higher and have better luck..maybe he will work with hawks when he's older?

So cute, maybe he could do a "video" share with all of us every Friday during the summer? ;-)
